The varied, ever-changing yet reassuringly familiar landscape of Skegness has long inspired those who live and work by the coast. From the epic, rolling Wolds to the calm yet sometimes dramatic torrents of the North Sea, the town’s contrasts have always provided endless inspiration — the bright, addictive allure of the fairground set against tranquil gardens, open skies, and unspoilt nature reserves.

Made in England was the project that started it all. What began as a celebration of the town’s creative spirit soon grew into something much greater — a cross-cultural collaboration that connected artists and communities on both sides of the North Sea. The exhibition paid homage to everything that makes Skegness special: its people, its scenery, its history, and the ebb and flow of tourism that continues to shape its identity.

Since 1979, Skegness has been twinned with the German town of Bad Gandersheim, with the aim of promoting friendship and understanding between the two communities. Made in England helped to reignite that spirit, creating new opportunities for collaboration and inspiring future projects that continue to strengthen the bond between our towns.

Through exploring both our differences and our shared experiences, the exhibition showed how the international language of art can broaden perspectives, nurture connection, and build lasting friendships across borders. Today, that partnership is stronger than ever — and continues to grow through new and exciting creative exchanges.
